McDonald’s Holiday Pie

McDonald’s makes one of the best apple pies which has been a staple on their menu for as long as I can remember.  A number of years ago McDonald’s started offering limited edition pies depending on the season. I know that they had offered a S’Mores pie (which is gross), a pumpkin pie (which is fabulous), and Strawberry & Cream pie (which is alright, but nothing to write home about). But I had never known that they had offered a McDonald’s Holiday Pie up until a few weeks ago.
On the way home from running a few errands, I swung through McDonald’s and decided to pick up a holiday pie to give it a try. Incase you’re not familiar; the holiday pie is a vanilla custard pie which is held inside a flaky, crusty and then topped with a bit of sugar and rainbow sprinkles.  The pies are served warm as is the case in all McDonald’s dessert pies. It’s a holiday party in a little handheld pie … and upon the first bite it brings that party to your mouth.
It reminded me of a Boston Cream donut without the chocolate atop of it. If you go into it with an open mind, not expecting to taste an apple pie, it’s truly delicious.  Secondly, if you enjoy custard in any way, I think you’d find this to be a slam dunk.  My mother tried it and since she truly only likes the apple pie and typically is a fan of flan or coconut custard pie, she wasn’t a fan. But regardless … this was a slam dunk for me.
A pie is 270 calories or 7 points plus values.

Lightened Up – Magic Apple Pie

Growing up my grandmother’s Magic Apple Pie (recipe here) was a staple a few times during the year. I admit, that recipe is delicious while also near-and-dear to my heart … but sometimes the sheer sweetness of it gets me. So with trying to lighten it up I conjured up the following recipe. I had recreated this recipe last year using Splenda instead of sugar and I truthfully wasn’t a huge fan of it. So I opted to recreate it using regular ingredients, just less of them while swapping a few things out.
This pie is good and tasty – but it’s not very sweet. The recipe could be adjusted to incorporate more sugar into it – but I found it to be pleasing on the palette as is. Since I used McIntosh apples they provided a nice sweetness so it wasn’t tart. But if you use something like a granny smith I’d suggest tweaking the sugar to subdue the tart.
Serves 8. 5 Points Plus Values.
  • 1 lb peeled sliced apples (I use McIntosh or Cortland)
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup fat free egg substitute
  • 4 tbsp margarine, melted
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp water
Toss peeled, sliced apples with roughly 3 tablespoons of sugar and cinnamon. Toss to coat then pile apples into a pie or cake pan.
Add flour in with leftover sugar/cinnamon mixture from tossed apples and add in remaining sugar, brown sugar, margarine, water and egg substitute and mix until well combined and blended together. The batter will be very, very thick.
Fold in walnuts until well combined, then pour mixture over the apples.
Bake for 1 to 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Pie is done when top is golden brown and the crust has hardened a bit. The pie is done when the apples aren’t watery (you should be able to tell, it’ll bubble up a bit around the crust).

Magic Apple Pie

This is my grandmother’s Magic Apple Pie recipe. Growing up my grandma would make this during the fall season and my mother continued on with that tradition.  A few years ago I started with the tradition of making the pies – and I have even froze a few pies in the past and defrosted and baked off for 20 or so minutes for a Christmas Eve celebration.
This truly is a delicious pie – but I will admit it’s very sweet.  I make the traditional recipe for family and friends and I have lightened up the recipe for myself so I can enjoy a classic wit a twist.  The crust is more along the lines of a pancake batter and blends with the apples and cooks up to a nice crunchy top with a nice soft cinnamon/sugar apple beneath it. It’s perfect … especially warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream alongside it.  The pie is also along the lines of an apple crumble where it doesn’t have a bottom crust.
I do want to point out crust (usually around the center) can get a little wet after a few days because it’s more of a pancake type crust. If that happens, you can always put a slice in the toaster oven, or even return the pie back to the oven in 5 minute intervals until the top crisps up again.
Keep in mind this is the original recipe so it will be higher in fat, calories and points plus values.  I have created a lighter version, which gives a similar effect but the crust is totally different. So … onto the recipe!
Serves 8. 9 Points Plus Values.

Fold in walnuts until well combined, then pour mixture over the apples.
Bake for 1 to 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Pie is done when top is golden brown and slightly hardened.  Test the center of the pie with a fork – if the batter looks undercooked (it will be gooey), return to the oven in 5 minute intervals.

McDonald’s Baked Pumpkin Pie

McDonald`s makes hands down the best fast food pies – at least in my opinion. I do enjoy them, but I do not have them often – maybe once or twice a year. I’m a fan of their apple pie, and I am also “guilty” of occasionally sampling some of their seasonal pies. There have been some flops, but the McDonald’s Baked Pumpkin Pie is definitely a win-win for me.
I was surprised with how yummy their pumpkin pie is! It had real pumpkin filling in it and it wasn’t very sweet.  All around it was delicious. The pumpkin pie tasted like you took a slice of pumpkin pie, wrapped it in McDonald’s signature pie crust and served it up luke warm.  I find these little pies to be handy especially since it’s not always easy to find single servings of pumpkin pie in the market. Having one of these gives the flavor of pumpkin pie, but without having a whole pie sitting in your house.  A yummy treat without any added temptation.
Calorie wise a pie is 240 calories which is equal to 6 points plus.

Skinnytaste’s No-Bake Peanut Butter Pie

When I saw this recipe on the Skinnytaste website I knew I had to make it.  I printed out the recipe and put it on my potential Easter dessert list.  My boyfriend mentioned that it would probably be wise to make the dessert before Easter to try them just incase it wasn’t a hit (I think he really just wanted peanut butter pie).  So, I picked up the ingredients and decided to substitute the Better n Peanut Butter for PB2.  I used the exact same measurements (1/3 cup PB2) although I did mix it with about 2 tablespoons of water just to make it into a smoother consistency.  The points plus values are still the same even with this particular substitution.

The pie is outstanding and was a hit at dinner.  It’s got a really nice airy consistency and taste just like a peanut butter pie should.  Smooth, creamy and delicious.  It was so good my mother asked me to make the pie for Easter.  In fact she asked me to make TWO pies for Easter so since I had chocolate PB2 and regular PB2, I made one of each.  Both are fabulous and both were a hit at Easter.

Peach Cobbler Pie

This is one of my indulgent grocery store purchases. I wanted something sweet and my nose, okay, so, stomach led me to the bakery department. The donuts were already gone and the strawberry shortcake parfaits were gone.  Then I spotted it – at first I thought it was some sort of apple cobbler, but when I read the label Peach Cobbler Pie I picked it up and put it into my cart.
With my pie in hand, I started my way out of the bakery department and turned back around. I was having a moment of indecisiveness. Should I buy it, should I put it back, should I try to find something different?  My brain started yelling “I should probably figure out the points plus values…” so I took out my phone, turned the pie a bit so I could view the nutrition label and figured it out.  1/6th of the pie was 9 points plus.  Okay, not terrible but not the greatest.  But its peach cobbler pie (oh my!)!Yes, this is how I reason with myself … silently.
So, I bought it and brought it home and it was absolutely delicious.  Worth every single bit of those 9 points plus.  My boyfriend thought it was delicious as well.  It was a classic peach cobbler but with a pie crust (truly my favorite part of any pie). Fabulous and pure genius if you ask me.  Will I purchase it again?  Probably … but not any time soon.  It’s just too good.
